Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It’s been used for years as a safe, temporary treatment for fine lines and deeper wrinkles caused by muscle contractions. Often called expression lines, these are wrinkles that develop from smiles, frowns, worry, and other movements of the face that become set as muscles contract and the surface skin follows their contours.
Botox proves it’s the dose that makes a substance dangerous, not the substance itself. Youthful skin has a thicker collagen layer, and it smooths those contours, but as you age, the expression lines assert themselves under less elastic skin. Botox injections temporarily relax these muscles, for up to four months. Expression lines fade as the muscles relax over time. We also offer another option with Dysport.
Is Botox safe?
Yes. Although it’s considered a toxin, it is effective and useful in a highly diluted form. Since its approval for cosmetic use in 2002, nearly 11 million vials of Botox have been sold. There are potential side effects, but the most common of these is simply irritation, such as bruising, around the injection site.
Botox injections in a medically supported clinic, such as Nouvelle Medical Aesthetics, assures the safest treatment results from the Botox procedure. The skillful injectors on staff receive on-going training and have many years of experience using this product.
What can I expect from a Botox treatment?
The injection process takes about 10 minutes, depending on where and how many injections are needed to treat your aesthetic goals. A very fine needle is used, so injections feel like a small pinch. If you’re particularly sensitive, a topical anesthetic may be used.
There’s little downtime with a typical Botox treatment. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after treatment. You’ll start to see results within 48 hours to a week, even with moderate and severe expression lines.
The results of a Botox treatment depend on the skills of the practitioner providing the injections. While you may find treatment available in a variety of places, treatment from an aesthetic specialist, such as Christina Stokke, assures the best results that are matched to your cosmetic desires.
